Making Sense of the Census (Fording the Langs, at Present)

Robert G. Langford (b. 1851, KY, s/o Craig and “Fannie,” m. Adeline __), a mulatto Bapt. min., of Oxford, Butler, Ohio

RELATIONSHIP: Not established. We think this Robert G. Langford was the son of “Fannie,” the slave mistress of a white Langford (probably Liberty or possibly Robert). We have not been able to document the relationship of these white Langfords to my ancestor, Fielding Langford, who was of the same Kentucky area, but migrated early to Indiana, where he joined the LDS faith and crossed the plains to what is now Utah with the Mormon pioneers. I think there’s a good chance all these early Rockcastle County area white Langfords are related (and, therefore, any of their mixed-race descendants). Because the courthouse burned down, it is hard to document connections. –shb

1860 CENSUS–“ROBERT” LANGFORD IS AGE TWELVE, BORN IN KENTUCKY, LIVING WITH CRAIG AND (FREED SLAVE MOTHER?) FRANCES LANGFORD AND SEVEN HALF (?) SIBLINGS, IN WAYNE, BUTLER, OHIO. (See notes of step (?) father, Craig Langford, and possible slave-owner father, Liberty Langford, for census and other detail.) –shb 13 Feb 2006

[Note: I think there’s a good chance that Hannah “Payton” got her name from the family of Nancy Peyton, who was probably one of Robert G.’s ancestors. The line goes like this: “Black” man Craig Langford married Fannie, thought to have been white man Liberty Langford’s mistress (they were freed as slaves in Rockcastle County, Kentucky, when purchased by a Quaker family, and they later settled in Ohio). Liberty Langford’s white wife was Sarah or “Sallie.” Liberty’s parents were Robert L. and Frances (Head) Langford, and Robert’s parents were Benjamin and Nancy (PEYTON) Langford–shb.] –shb 12 Jun 2006
