Making Sense of the Census (Fording the Langs, at Present)

Richard S. Lankford (b. 1832 in KY, m. Mary __), of Hart, Warrick, Indiana

RELATIONSHIP: This “Richard S. Lankford” could fit into the child-lineup of my ancestor, Fielding Lankford (son of Walker Lankford, son of Joseph–see his lengthy chronology, below). Fielding and his wife Sarah Bethurem had four known children in Kentucky, before they migrated to Clay County, Indiana,in the late 1820s, where they became LDS converts, “gathered” to Nauvoo, Illinois, and crossed the plains to the Salt Lake Valley, with the Mormon pioneers. However, I have no documentation for this potential placement of Richard S., though the fact that he named a son “Joseph W.” is certainly of interest. –shb 18 May 2006

ANOTHER “RICHARD LANKFORD” IN HART, WARRICK, INDIANA. The 1860 Census of Hart, Warrick, Indiana lists a Richard Lankford, age fifty, and (also a) wife Mary, both born in England, and three children, all born in Indiana (see my Legacy ID 67438). This Richard does not seem to be connected to the Richard of same town, below, whose parents were both born in the States, but then again, the census taker could have been more drunk than usual that day. –shb 18 May 2006
